Estranged father's policy less than a year old-can I still file?

My dad died over a year ago. we lived in different states and weren’t really talking, but I am his only child so he had me as the beneficiary for his life insurance. When I was working with the funeral home, the director basically told me to not even bother trying to file the claim because

  1. his policy was less than a year old at the time he died, and
  2. with my dad and I not being close at all I knew very little about his medical history and didn’t think I could fill out the forms accurately

Was the funeral director right in telling me not to bother?? I’m 28 and don’t have much family or support so those benefits would be genuinely life changing for me.

File the claim. The worst they can do is say no. They will likely investigate to see if he misrepresented any medical records, depending on the cause of death, since the policy is less than two years old. You don’t need to provide his medical records…just say

Submit the claim. Let the insurance company tell you no.

The funeral director may have been telling you that your Dad committed suicide without really telling you he committed suicide. Suicides are not covered if in the first 2 policy years.

It definitely wasn’t suicide. He was on hospice for lung cancer when he died

I would definitely file then

Did he have lung cancer when he did the application? That might be an issue. You need to review the policy
