Urine sample for life insurance

Back in February, my spouse and I applied for life insurance after returning from a trip to Amsterdam. Being in our early 30s, we were new to the process and didn’t realize how thorough the testing would be.

A smaller insurance company asked us to schedule an at-home medical exam. During the exam, they took our vitals, blood, and urine. I got worried because I had taken edibles in Amsterdam, and our agent hadn’t mentioned anything about drug testing.

I tested positive for cannabis and was asked to sign a form about my cannabis use. Unlike my spouse’s results, mine weren’t available immediately. Feeling uncomfortable, I canceled the application without signing anything. The lab handling the results had errors, making it difficult for me to access them, so the insurance company had to release them manually.

I still need life insurance. How long will these results affect me? Can another company find them? If I apply later, do I need to mention this? I don’t use cannabis habitually and would test clean now. Should I wait a year or more before applying again? I’ve started with another company, and they asked about my previous application and exam.

It’s just weed? I’m sure you’re fine.

There are many carriers that have a favorable opinion on marijuana. Even with acknowledged moderate recreational use, you ought to be able to obtain advantageous nonsmoking rates. It is not as acceptable to test positive without telling anyone about your use.
