My mom passed away today. She had life insurance through her job, but the policy is set to end on 1/31/25 since she was no longer employed. I plan to contact a funeral home tomorrow and get the death certificate. If I don’t get these things done before 1/31/25, will I lose the chance to file a claim?
I’m so sorry for your loss. If you don’t need the money urgently, you still have time to file a claim later. The policy was active on the date of her passing, so you should be able to make a claim. You can also ask the funeral home about something called an assignment to cover funeral costs. Are you listed as the beneficiary?
Take care of yourself during this tough time. Again, I’m sorry for your loss.

Thank you for your kind words. I am the beneficiary, but I’ve never handled anything like this before, and I feel completely lost. Unfortunately, I’ll need the money for funeral expenses and other arrangements since I can’t cover them myself. Thanks for explaining.
Sorry for your loss. Take care of yourself during this difficult time.

Thank you, I appreciate it.
I’m sorry for your loss. Since the policy was active when she passed, you should have no trouble filing a claim. The end date of 1/31/25 doesn’t affect this.

Thank you. This still feels surreal, and I’m overwhelmed trying to figure it all out. I appreciate your response.
It should be a simple process. Usually, her employer will notify the insurance company to start the claim. They’ll ask for the death certificate and some forms to be filled out. That’s often all they need.
If the funeral home can’t wait for the insurance payout, you can agree to a funeral home assignment. This means they’ll be paid directly by the insurance company for the agreed amount, after confirming the claim is valid.
