How to become a licensed insurance agent in maryland

I am a 22-year-old licensed insurance agent in Maryland and need some advice.

First, how can I start making sales without buying leads (they are too expensive right now) and without a client list from my office? I need to hit a certain sales target before getting my client list.

Second, I want to move to NYC eventually. If I want to sell insurance in New York or another state, do I need to retake the exam for that state, or is my current license valid everywhere, and do I need to pay for the new state license?

Use social media, neighborhood businesses, and community activities to build your network and generate sales without purchasing leads. Provide complimentary lectures or workshops to draw in prospective customers. You’ll need to apply for a non-resident license in New York and may have to pay related costs to move to NYC. It’s usually not required to retake examinations if you already have a license.

Ethan, I’m also licensed in MD. While requirements vary by company, most require you to buy leads or find your own. The company I work for allows me to finance my leads, meaning I can get leads now and pay back the cost after making a sale.

For licenses in other states, you’ll need to contact both NY and MD’s State Departments of Insurance to understand the requirements for transferring residency. Each state has its own protocols, so it’s best to ask them directly.

It might be wise to obtain a non-resident license in NY well before you move. This is just my opinion and may not be a strict requirement.
