I have a visit with their doctor for the insurance. Do they check for marijuana?
I had a policy with NYL in California.
Yes, they do test for marijuana along with most common drugs.
Just be honest when answering the questions.
NYL does test for marijuana. Here are their guidelines:
Age Less than 18 - Decline
Ages 18-25 - If using 2 days per week or less - Non-smoker;
If using 3-6 days per week - Nonsmoker Class 03;
If using daily - Decline
Ages 26-49 - If using 2 days per week or less - Preferred Non-smoker;
If using 3-6 days per week - Nonsmoker;
If using daily - Class 02 nonsmoker;
Ages 50+ - If using 2 days per week or less - Select preferred;
If using 3-6 days per week - Preferred Non-smoker;
If using daily - Nonsmoker.
FYI, NY Life isn’t the best choice for term insurance pricing, so other good carriers might give you a better offer. Just keep that in mind if the rate isn’t what you want after approval.
@Denver
Have you checked the premiums since they repriced? I think it was late 2022 or early 2023.

I have. They aren’t bad, but if you can pay less and get chronic or critical illness benefits along with longer conversion options, there are many better choices in my view.
But if this guy knows he wants to convert some or all to Whole Life within the first 10 policy years, and if they make a decent offer, and he values the name recognition and A++ rating, then maybe it’s good for him!
I already did. Just wondering if I need to quit using pot for a while?

I don’t know if they test for THC specifically. They definitely check for cocaine and nicotine.

That’s what I was curious about. Thanks!

I’m just a stranger online, so I could be wrong.

That’s true. Your thoughts match mine, but my wife thinks I should stop using pot for a bit. I feel like they care more about tobacco and harder drugs, but who knows?
@Mali
I took my blood test with THC in my system and nothing happened.

So they didn’t charge you extra per month for THC?
@Mali
Why not try gummies instead? Problem solved!
Yes, they do. If you’re honest on your application about marijuana use, you may get a smoker rating or a standard non-smoker rating. If you lie, you’ll get declined coverage.
Yes.
They will test the urine, and THC will show up. Even tiny gummies can trigger it, which can affect your rating.
They will check your vitals, and if you use it, it will show in the results. How long is your term?
First question, do you smoke with paper or glass? If you’re using blunts, take a month off. If it’s glass and you haven’t had your medical yet, take about a 2-week break, and you should be fine. Plus, since it’s Q4, you have a better chance of getting approved even with weed in your system.
I smoke too, took a 2-week break, and got a top rating, so I might know a thing or two.
They ask if you “used” in the past year. For example, if you puffed a cigar for your birthday, they consider you a smoker and will rate you as such. It makes no sense. Just avoid those activities for a year and then reapply.
