I’m thinking about getting into life insurance, but I’m not sure if there’s much demand anymore.
Does anyone still buy life insurance? Am I wasting my time trying to be an agent? I’ve heard mixed things. I don’t personally know anyone with a policy except my mom, and she only has term insurance.

If most people don’t have life insurance, doesn’t that mean they could be potential clients?
You might be looking at it the wrong way.
Exactly.
I get that, but a lot of people either can’t afford it or don’t want to spend the money. Maybe it’s just the people I know, but how do you actually advertise locally without relying on Google or Yelp?
I worked in financial services for years. People don’t talk about their insurance, so it’s easy to assume they don’t have it. It can be a great career if you’re in the right environment.
You’re thinking too small. Selling insurance is just one part of a bigger financial picture.
There are so many opportunities beyond just individual policies—think retirement planning, legacy planning, buy-sell agreements for businesses, critical illness, disability coverage, and more.
Most top agents don’t just sell term life policies. Corporate policies and investment-linked policies bring in the big commissions. When you get your first major corporate life insurance deal, it’ll change your perspective.
Focus on showing clients the value of long-term planning, and you’ll do well. I’m in Canada, but from what I hear, the U.S. insurance market has its own challenges.
@Ren
Once you write your first million-dollar annual premium or a big max-death-benefit policy, you’ll be glad you stuck with it. Back when I was in the industry, the max capacity across insurers and reinsurers was $150 million. Curious what it is now.
I’m a millennial, and most of my friends only have employer-sponsored term life. A few have extra coverage through their jobs, but individual and permanent policies seem less common than they used to be.
I have life insurance, and there’s definitely a market, but it’s competitive. Getting licensed isn’t hard, but shady agents make things difficult for the rest of us.
I do this part-time. Right now, I’m working on five policies—two submitted, one waiting for a signature, and two more almost ready. It’s all about building trust and offering solutions that actually help people.
If you have questions, feel free to ask. No sales pitch, just straight advice.
If you’re an independent agent, there’s more to insurance than just funeral expenses.
Think about mortgage protection—people who recently bought a home and are the primary income earners need coverage. What about people with serious health conditions who know they don’t have much time left? They need guaranteed policies.
A lot of families don’t realize how much financial strain losing a stay-at-home parent would cause. Insurance is about protecting what matters.
@Shan
Stay-at-home parents need coverage too. If something happens to them, the working parent will need to pay for childcare, and that gets expensive.

Exactly. A lot of families don’t think about that until it’s too late.
