I signed up for life insurance and disability insurance with Northwestern Mutual. They are now asking for my medical records related to mental health things. When I talked to the insurance company they said I already signed an ROI so they will be calling to get the information. I informed them that I have to do one with my NP(nurse practitioner) office. That’s when I was told that some doctors are particular about releasing information and if they require their own roi that’s okay. I can fill that out too.
After talking about it with a family member they asked why they wanted medical records for mental health stuff when they had already paid to get blood work done and it was fine. Plus they didn’t want medicinal records from any other doctor. After thinking about it I no longer what to release my medical information to them. I will be telling my NP’s office as well so they know. With that being said can I deny the release of my medical records if I change my mind and signed an ROI with the insurance company?
You can call the insurance company, explain your decision, and they should respect it and drop your underwriting.
But why did you change your mind? Was it based on advice from your family? If so, what did they say? Blood work is just one part of your health, so be cautious about taking advice from people who aren’t experts in the area you need advice on.
The insurance company is likely looking into your mental health to ensure there haven’t been any major issues like suicide attempts. Risk isn’t just about cholesterol levels. Even someone with perfect bloodwork but with mental health concerns could be considered a higher risk than someone with diabetes.
Thank you for answering! I’m not sure why my post is getting downvoted. I’m just trying to figure this out.
You raised some good points. I changed my mind because a family member told me that once you give access, anyone can see it, and that made me nervous. I’m not suicidal and have never tried to take my life. I just have ADHD and anxiety, which I take medication for. The thought of anyone having access to my information makes me uneasy. I wanted to hear other opinions outside of my insurance company because I know they have their own interests.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I’ll probably take my post down soon to avoid more downvotes.
Like the other comment said, you can just tell the insurance company you don’t want the policy anymore and they will stop everything right then.
Though I am not sure of the logic of the person who said that the insurance company doesn’t need mental health records just because they took bloodwork. Failing to see how those are related?
I just got insured through NWM but was tabled because of my medications and mental health records. If you told the medical examiner about your current meds and mental health “issues,” the medical records will only confirm what you already shared.
